Moon Astrology: The Daily Moving Moon

The Moon passes through all the signs of the zodiac in just under 28 days, spending two and a half days in each sign.

Moon in Aries ♈︎ – ︎Fire. There is energy for bursts of activity activated by a need to initiate change and start projects. You have courage to set things in motion and resistance results in impatient behaviour or selfishness. Nevertheless you could benefit from self-assertiveness.

Moon in Taurus ♉︎ – Earth. This is energy that connects to the senses and seems stubborn but it can settle into calm stability, leaving you feeling careful and seeming unhurried. If a concern with material security becomes stuck this can be transformed through sensuous and grounded activity.

Moon in Gemini ♊︎ – Air. This is a lively and stimulating time for communication and ideas, for reading and speaking in every form. There is often more than one activity happening at once or simply restlessness and scattered emotions. Be ready to take notes that can be reviewed.

Moon in Cancer ♋︎ - Water. The Moon rules this sign and so we can see heightened emotionalism but these emotions are clearly expressed. Domestic concerns are highlighted so make time for nurturing your chosen or given family, your friends and your home. Nourishment matters and eating together is a particularly happy time.

Moon in Leo ♌︎ – Fire. Leo is a vital sign that concerns the feeling of self. Reflect on asking for feedback and giving others input that they need about their performance. The negative ego which seems grandstanding and is very demanding can relax into the personally generous, romantic and creative you.

Moon in Virgo ♍︎ – Earth. There is a desire for the practical aspects of the mind, for meticulous detail, for discriminating and categorising material things. Health becomes a concern: it could be in service to others, or restoring health to the Earth, or gathering herbs.

Moon in Libra ♎︎ – Air. The mind wants to be expressed among others; family, friends and lovers of every kind thrive in shared spaces further helped by beauty, candles and colour. Good teamwork happens when people cooperate and develop joint goals through sociability, for everything from diplomacy to romance.

Moon in Scorpio ♏︎ – Water. Though they give a great energy for doing accounting, taxes and deep cleaning, these intensely felt days are not always easy to cope with. We all face the dark, shadowy side of our fears at times so express this, make space for your inner self to rage if that is needed.

Moon in Sagittarius ♐︎ – Fire. Yes! Throw off responsibility and do physical activity and note the tendency to make grand gestures and be rushed and adventurous. This optimism can be let loose to burn the bridges or we can use this energy to hurry through difficult parts of the adventure of life.

Moon in Capricorn ♑︎ – Earth. Now is a good time for organised work and progressing long-term activities so lean into the practical concerns around these. However, when ambitions are large and progress is short this might lead to pessimism. The inner goat is the pragmatist who makes jokes and summons Earth magic.

Moon in Aquarius ♒︎ – Air. New groups or radical undertakings are progressed and the ideas must be tested. Some insights seem to be especially personal and individual. However not all that you think about is eternally true and you should be especially curious about your intuition.

Moon in Pisces ♓︎ – Water. This is a dreamy time for watery activities and magical possibilities. Firmly held points of view can loosen up, so make good use of your deep intuition, celebrate the irrational and spirit paths. Walk the boundaries so that they become known. And, as always, make art.

Planting by the Phases of the Moon

Every person on the Earth sees the same Moon at night. She waxes from New Moon to Full Moon and back again in just under 28 days. During this time the Moon also travels through all the signs of the zodiac. Understanding the Phases of the Moon for planting makes for strengthening the above-ground processes in the waxing phase and below-ground in the early waning phase. The later waning phase is barren and has special gifts.

The Phases of the Moon are marked in the diary and on the calendar. Below is a guide for working with those phases.

Full Moon - On the day of the Full Moon trim all plants that need it for an improved harvest. In the cold months prune trees and vines and in the warmer season snap off excess growth on plants such as tomatoes.

Until the Last Quarter Moon for one week - The Waning Moon encourages growth below-ground. Establish or transplant plants that need strong roots such as below-ground crops, root vegetables and bulbs as well as perennials and trees.

Until the New Moon for a week - and pull up weeds and competing plants. Scattered seeds are less likely to germinate and set seed. Improve the soil by mulching and adding composting.

New Moon - On the day of the Dark Moon you should not plant anything.

Waxing Moon, growing Moon - From the New Moon’s first sliver until the Moon is nearly full. As the sap is drawn up, focus on leafy greens, grains and vegetables that fruit above the ground. Sow seeds and propagate, take cuttings and transplant.

Working with the Void of Course Moon

As the Moon orbits the Earth once every 28 days we see her phases - her changing face - and we also see the Moon move through all the signs of the zodiac in that time, making her the fastest moving astrological heavenly light. The Moon makes connections with the other planets too and these aspects are when matters happen or come to fruition. While in a particular sign there is a period of time, after the last significant aspect and before she moves into a new sign, when the Moon is said to be Void of Course. The Void of Course period of time differs each time and these times can be seen in the diary. When astrologers help people choose dates and times for events that need to be successful, they will avoid the Void of Course Moon. This period of time is free floating and unpredictable and nothing that you plan will happen as you expect. In real life people often do have events during such times and if you attend such an event I advise that you are light-hearted about the outcomes. What is it good for? The period of time of the Void of Course Moon is perfect for continuing with previously agreed tasks, doing routine jobs. Furthermore it is ideal for reflecting, pondering, assimilating, brainstorming and imagining.

Retrograde Inner Planets

In 2024 Mercury is retrograde three times, Venus is direct all year and Mars is retrograde once.

Mercury Retrograde ~ Mercury rules communication, short journeys, medicine and hands. By extension this includes our communications devices and information technologies such as books, letters, and the information on our phones and computers. Mercury retrograde does not break things, however it will show up any weakness. So Review. Edit. Rehearse. Research. This is a great time to review contracts but not to make new commitments. Reflect on communications; Reconfirm appointments and travel plans; Resolve misunderstandings; Repair.

Mars Retrograde ~ Mars rules action and therefore it also rules frustration and fighting, goals, motivation and the work that we do. Mars is associated with iron, red and the oxygenation levels of your blood. The issues that arise during Mars retrograde are best addressed by doing and experimenting and re-doing. Work on peace-making and re-channel aggressive frustration. Tackle the difficult parts of projects. Breathe outdoors. Breathe deeply and improve the oxygen levels in your blood.

The Moon Through The Signs

The Moon's journey through the signs takes just under 28 days and it defines our original calendar month. It's a journey like that of the Earth through the signs, which defines the calendar year. But of course it's much more frequent and so it brings different opportunities to learn about cycles of change and growth.

Moon in Aries ♈︎ - Aries' ruler Mars brings impetus to vision and to plant the seed. The need for clarity of thought at the start of things is highlighted. Confucius taught that it's vital to pay close attention to thought at the beginning of undertakings and at their ending.

Moon in Taurus ♉︎ - What has been seeded must spread roots and it’s desire that draws us outwards. This phase is ruled by Venus, whose Latin name comes from the ancient Vanas – desire. We look for a nurturing environment to expand into. Venus is also the Goddess of fecundity and prosperity: we desire to grow.

Moon in Gemini ♊︎ - Sprouting its first leaves, the plant breaks into the sunlight, the wind and the rain. Mercury rules this phase and it's about expanding and communicating beyond one's immediate environs. The image is of a winged messenger: it is time to articulate your thoughts.

Moon in Cancer ♋︎ - With sunlight bringing energy to leaves, roots can now be deepened. Moon in Cancer is about deepening growth and it's naturally associated with home and family. The Moon is ruler here, which points to a special opportunity for awareness in any Moon cycle.

Moon in Leo ♌︎ - The flowering. What was begun with the Moon in Aries, now reaches fulfilment. The individual, the idea, the project has achieved individuality. We can take our cue from the centredness and generosity of the life-giving Sun in this phase.

Moon in Virgo ♍︎ - The flowering of Leo produces seeds. Now the individual or project begins to be aware of the idea of service to a greater whole. The ruler is again Mercury, this time as a bringer of the power of discernment.

Moon in Libra ♎︎ - The gathering in, the harvest. There is at this stage balancing, weighing, but not judgement. We can now be aware of the harvest; of all the consequences of what we have seeded. Venus rules again, because we now meet the offspring of our desires.

Moon in Scorpio ♏︎ - Achieving balance in Libra leads to being able to make choices in Scorpio about what we wish to carry forward. Now is the time to make choices: all fruits, all ideas, all habits, will propagate if we empower them. But which will we choose? Pluto, its ruler, is the planet of deep transformation.

Moon in Sagittarius ♐︎ - We can now project those seeds we have chosen into the future with clarity of thought. Sagittarius' ruler Jupiter brings expansiveness, generosity, vision, desire to grow further and to learn and explore.

Moon in Capricorn ♑︎ - The visions of Sagittarius will require work to be realised. The Moon in Capricorn brings us down to Earth to prepare the ground again for the next cycle of growth. Its ruler Saturn brings learning through effort, limitations and boundaries.

Moon in Aquarius ♒︎ - Having prepared the ground, we realise that water will be essential to the new growth we are working towards. It's a time to remember the other powers and life forces that surround us and to ask for help. Aquarius' ruler Uranus brings lightning bolts of insight into our true purpose.

Moon in Pisces ♓︎ - The ending of a cycle. A time when the magical transformation occurs; the death of the individual seed and the birth of the new plant. Pisces' ruler is Neptune – a symbol of our oceanic connectedness to all things: we are both the old and the new.

Phases of the Moon

There are three natural cycles that give us a sense of time and of change on Earth. Two of these cycles – the diurnal cycle (day and night) and the seasonal year - depend on the relation of the Earth to the Sun.

The third cycle – the phases of the Moon – depends on the relationship of three bodies: Earth, Moon and Sun. The magical number three brings the possibility of a more subtle realisation and integration. The Moon makes change visible to us and offers the opportunity to develop greater awareness of our relationship to change. There remains much mystery in this ageless cycle: we don't understand it fully, but we can see that its tidal pull affects many levels of life on Earth and an awareness of the Moon phase can help us navigate the many currents of our lives.

The Phases of the Moon can be understood by looking at the key points in the seasonal year. The eight stages of the Moon cycle correspond to the eight major festivals of the year and if you use this model, you can bring your own interpretations to this based on your unique journeys through the seasons and your own sense of the changes that each stage brings. Here are the correspondences with a few keywords.

New Moon ~ The Winter Solstice. Birth of the Light. New Beginnings. The seeding of a new cycle.

Crescent Moon ~ Imbolc. Candlemas. Awakening. First Flowering. A time to nurture the new.

First Quarter ~ Spring Equinox. Balance. A crisis point in the growth cycle where bonds with the old may need to be broken.

Gibbous Moon ~ Beltane. May Day. The Sacred Marriage. Growth accelerates; it can be celebrated and strengthened.

Full Moon ~ Summer Solstice. Fulfilment. The height of the growth and light. All is visible.

Disseminating Moon ~ Lammas. First Harvest. The time to give what we have grown, to bring it to others for the benefit of the whole.

Last Quarter ~ Autumn Equinox. Balance. Harvest. Here we can become more aware of the results of our creativity.

Balsamic Moon ~ Samhain/ Halloween. A last sliver of light now in the sky and time for deep transformation.

Retrograde Planets 2023

When a planet appears to move in reverse along the zodiac in relation to the Earth, it's said to be retrograde. Retrograde motion brings the opportunity to work more inwardly, more deeply in the sphere of activity indicated by that planet and sign. It's habitually associated with things being 'difficult' and seen as a bad time to attempt progress; actually it is a call to shift perspective and bring attention to the inner aspects of a situation. The progress made by such a shift is no less real and it prepares the ground for the growth that will resume when the planet turns direct. A retrograde planet passes three times over any spot on the zodiac: once forwards, once retrograde and then a final 'direct' pass. These three passes can be seen as three opportunities or initiations into the learning offered by the planet and sign. We get a first lesson (first pass), then a challenge to really internalise the lesson (the retrograde pass) and then a final pass. This last pass will be experienced in one of two ways: one has either embraced the lesson and internalised the change on offer – in which case things go smoothly – or one has resisted the learning, in which case the necessary change will be experienced as external and apparently random 'misfortunes'.

Mercury ☿ ~ 29th December 2022 retrograde, 18th January 2023 direct. 21st April retrograde, 15th May direct. 23rd August retrograde, 15th September direct. 13th December retrograde, 2nd January 2024 direct.

VENUS ♀︎ ~ 23rd July retrograde, 4th September direct.

MARS ♂︎ ~ 30th October 2022 retrograde, 12th January 2023 direct.

Void of Course Moon (v/c)

Within each monthly cycle of the Moon, there are 12 short periods of time when the Moon has completed all the aspects that it will form with other planetary bodies while in a particular sign of the zodiac and has not yet entered the next sign. During this lull, the Moon is said to be Void of Course. This period can last anything from a few minutes or hours (common) to a couple of days (rare). Think of it as a lull between waves – or maybe the pause between roller coaster rides. It is possible at these times to gather oneself if one has become scattered and to take a moment for reflection and for deeper work.

♍︎ Moon in Virgo is calm, clear and focused. We connect with the wisdom of the body, bringing together body, mind and soul to remind us that we are holistic beings, whole unto ourselves. We refine and purify, integrating the ideal with the reality and accepting ourselves as perfectly imperfect.

♎︎ Moon in Libra brings us into balance, with the subtle adjustments we need to keep our equilibrium. We are deeply aware of others, forming and strengthening close relationships. This peaceful and harmonious moon also reminds us that life can be unfair, awakening our inner activist and seeker of social justice.

♏︎ Moon in Scorpio goes deep, carrying us out of our conscious awareness and into our feeling selves. Our awareness is heightened, showing us the undercurrents of energy which swirl around us and shape our actions. We are taken into the darkness to seek its gifts and powers of rebirth.

♐︎ Moon in Sagittarius calls us to explore, to break away from the familiar and widen our perspective. We look up, look out, look beyond, hungry for life, for experience, for freedom. Enthusiasm and optimism inspire us and we trust in the universe, in the spark of inner truth.

♑︎ Moon in Capricorn holds us steady, roots us in our current reality. We strengthen and sustain, creating structures which hold us and the world together. We may be taken back to bare bones, reminded what is real and solid beneath us. We climb the mountain sure-footed as the goat.

♒︎ Moon in Aquarius awakens us to what needs to change, in ourselves and in the world. The light of consciousness shows us where we can play our part in shifting collective energies, pulling on the web of life to strengthen freedom and justice. We find clarity and a sense of perspective.

♓︎ Moon in Pisces is sensitive and soulful, dissolving our boundaries and allowing us to merge back into universal consciousness. We tune in to the mysteries of life, going with our inner flow and trusting it to carry us. Our dreams and visions call us to connect with spirit.

The Phases of the Moon

The New Moon is hidden by the sun and we sow our seeds in the darkness. We make space, allowing our intuition to guide us. In this sacred pause we speak our intentions to the universe, trusting in our own inner powers and the powers around us to come together and bring our dreams into being.

At the Crescent Moon, energy is gathering. Tiny shoots begin to grow and momentum builds as we begin to understand the choices we are making and the thinking behind them. Each action fuels the next as we align ourselves with energies of growth and change.

Willpower is strong as we reach the First Quarter Moon. We are dynamic and determined in our pursuit of growth, ready to overcome whatever may stand in our way. Our commitment may be tested and we turn potential obstacles to our own advantage.

The Gibbous Moon brings the impulse to refine, review and revise, seeking meaning and context. This is a time for purification and cleansing as our power increases.

At the Full Moon, all is illuminated. There is revelation and fulfilment, perhaps a goal achieved as we reach the peak of the cycle. We become aware of ourselves in connection and in relationship with the world around us. The Full Moon is a turning point, bringing conscious awareness and objectivity.

With the Disseminating Moon, our energy is turned outwards into the world. A process of release is underway as we move into the waning cycle, assessing who we’ve become and what we’ve achieved.

The Last Quarter Moon brings a new current of dynamic energy, perhaps obstacles which need to be overcome. Our impulse to act is tempered with reflection and contemplation, a need to transform and change.

The Balsamic Moon asks us what we will carry forward into the new cycle and what we need to release. We banish or sacrifice old ways of being, clearing inner space and enjoying the peace and quiet which remains. Quiet reflection and inner stillness connect us with our deepest wisdom.

Void of Course Moon (v/c)

As the moon gets ready to transition between signs every two to three days, she is said to be Void of Course, no longer connecting with the other planetary bodies. The Void of Course moon is a liminal time, a time of transition. There may be confusion or a lack of focus, a kind of lack of resources which means that we lose our focus or sense of direction. Every few days, the Void of Course moon reminds us of the need to let go of our plans and our doing, to centre ourselves and sit with uncertainty a little. During Void of Course moon transitions, we can hear our inner voice more clearly as we slow down and clear space.

Retrograde Planets

☿ Mercury has three periods of retrograde motion in 2022, mainly in the earth signs with some forays back into the air signs (14 January – 4 February in Capricorn, 10 May to 2 June in Gemini and Taurus, 10 September to 1 October in Libra and Virgo). During these times, we may be questioning the structures we have built for ourselves, reflecting on our work in the world and the sense of worth it brings us. Mercury retrograde is always a time for contemplation rather than action or decisions and the retrograde periods this year ask us to review our resources, both inner and outer, and the way that we use them. We are called to consider what we are creating and bringing into tangible reality, the results of our efforts. Mercury retrograde in the earth signs calls us to question where we feel rooted and how we are able to bloom.

♀︎ Venus is retrograde in Capricorn at the beginning of the year (19 December 2021 to 28 January 2022). We might be feeling more introverted than usual, reflecting on our relationship dynamics and what we value (including ourselves). Venus retrograde goes deep and may not be fully conscious, so that we only become aware of our changing desires when the retrograde period is complete.

♂︎ Mars spends the final months of the year retrograde in Gemini (30 October 2022 to 12 January 2023). We respond or react to the world around us rather than acting dynamically and taking the initiative may call for more effort than usual. Introspection is more powerful than action and this is a time to review and revise all that we know, or think we know.

♊︎ Moon in Gemini ~ Airy Gemini Moon can have you sway from one person or activity to the next quickly, as Gemini Moons are very sociable, as Gemini adds mental and verbal stimulation to the proceedings. Gemini can be flamboyant, so pay attention to over-expenditure. Remember yourself and take time for self care.

♋︎ Moon in Cancer ~ Watery Cancer Moon is in its own ruling sign and this can only mean heightening of psychic awareness and sensitivity to others. Finding yourself in a position to counsel or offer your surroundings as shelter at this time should be of no surprise, if you are going with the Moon’s flow.

♌︎ Moon in Leo ~ Fixed and fiery Leo sounds his regal roar to all those listening. The need for recognition may be strong but keep the ego in check. That sexy confidence which Leo brings to this Moon can spread affection, joy and happiness. A warning not to fall for empty flattery or you may become shut off from others, rather than sharing your warm heart and generosity.

♍︎ Moon in Virgo ~ Earth mother Virgo adapts and flows with quick instincts. A love of nature thrums through this Moon. An instinct to be of service may present itself, but take care not to overwhelm yourself. This can be a time of finding perfect natural order within your own realms.

♏︎ Moon in Scorpio ~ Scorpio Moon is deeply transformative and has the ability to make you face your fears head on. A heightened psychic ability means you can see through false pretences. There is no time for dishonesty or disloyalty. This Moon offers deep desires, intimacy and bonding.

♐︎ Moon in Sagittarius ~ Suddenly we see the bigger picture thanks to Sagittarius Moon. This Moon can help you to take aim and fire those arrows in the direction of your authenticity, so that you walk and talk your own truth with honesty and integrity. But to aim is to have loaded the bow. This means the ideas must first be honed. Possibilities are endless, and this Moon carries with it the luck of Jupiter.

♑︎ Moon in Capricorn ~ Earthy Capricorn Moon brings a sense of responsibility and dependability. Quality over quantity with Capricorn Moon. This Moon helps highlight your true purpose with clarity and makes clear that all good things take time and action to manifest.

♒︎ Moon in Aquarius ~ Progressive ideas flow openly, as does the desire to be of service to the broader spectrum of humanity. It will definitely make you think outside the box to include the rebellious, non-conformist, scientific and intellectual take on the world of global social consciousness. Stand up and be counted is the theme of the day.

♓︎ Moon in Pisces ~ The dreamy essence of Pisces Moon will affect your emotions deeply. It is advisable to go with the flow or risk upsetting yourself on a deep level. You may become acutely aware of others’ emotions. You may feel compassionate and want to be of service, but also take care of your own heart-space.

Phases of the Moon

The Moon holds an immense influence over us as she follows her cycle of birth, life, death, regeneration and rebirth. Each phase either expands her power (waxing) and influence, or slowly withdraws it (waning). Lunar cycles take up to 28 days, during which time the size, strength and shape of the Moon energies and moonlight vary accordingly. In one month the Moon cycles through what the Sun and Earth take a whole year doing. The ebbing and flowing energies of the Moon affect us as well as Earth’s tides. Understanding and working with the phases allows our minds, bodies and spirits to resonate and function on an holistic level. Our absorption of Moon and planetary energies allows us greater understanding of ourselves, our relationships to others and to Mother Earth, gifting us with a much healthier lifestyle and state of mind.

New Moon ~ The New Moon is a time for generating new ideas and planning new projects, new beginnings, for soul searching and discovering your personal truths. This is the Maiden Moon. Make time for new beginnings, to set new intentions, and plant and gestate seeds of hope.

Waxing Crescent ~ The seeds we plant need nurturing to encourage the beginnings of life, bringing to light the intentions set at New Moon. Energy and momentum are on the increase.

First Quarter Moon ~ You have nurtured your intention and now is time for the seed to take root. Channel the flow of lunar energies for optimum growth. This is a good time for drawing in, taking action, finding inner strength and endurance, and finding solutions to problems which arise.

Waxing Gibbous ~ A time of harmonious cultivation and surging growth toward fruition and manifestation. You can now share what you have learned thus far. Gain help and advice from others in the know. This is a time for cultivation and co-creativity.

Full Moon ~ This is the blooming Mother phase, the fullness of the rounded belly of the Moon. You have birthed plans and they come to fruition. The amplified lunar energies enable you to release any negative energies which may have arisen, and be free of them.

Disseminating Moon/Waning Gibbous ~ Harvest time. Share with others what you have gleaned from your experience. Honour yourself, your accomplishments, inner strength and personal growth. Review the changes which need to be made for improvement. Enjoy a time of sharing for the greater good.

Last Quarter Moon ~ Energy is slower and reflective. Give gratitude. Recognise that which has become obsolete to your plans and release it. This is a time of maturity, organisation and learning from hindsight.

Balsamic / Dark Moon / Fallow Moon ~ Darkness has an astounding energy of its own. Some will utilise this energy, others will rest with this Moon. Prepare for the next cycle, maybe with new plans, or maybe preparing improved plans. A time of transition and wisdom of the Crone.

Retrograde Planets

In ancient Greek the word ‘Planet’ means wanderer. Planets have a cycle to their motions, which we refer to as direct, retrograde and stationary. When a planet moves into retrograde it means that by optical illusion, the planet appears to move back through the zodiac sign it had previously been in. The planet will only go direct after it manoeuvres into the next sign. This illusion is created when the Earth’s rotational speed is greater than that of the planet in question. Although illusionary, retrograde planets still hold sway over us humans. Some of us are affected by the slowing of the planet’s presence and aspects. This withdrawal of motion creates a time for reflection and healing.

Mercury Retrograde ~ Possibly the most frequent retrograder of the solar system, Mercury goes retrograde six times over this year, for around 3 weeks at a time. Ruling all forms of communication, travel, electronics, business and personal documentation, Mercury retrograde is not a time to trifle with any of the above in a frivolous fashion. The trick is to rethink, revisit, re-edit, revise, and to think before you act. Dates: 30 Jan; 21 Feb; 29 May; 22 Jun; 27 Sept; 18 Oct.

Venus Retrograde ~ Venus retrogrades only once in every 18 months, for a period of up to 6 weeks. Venus is all about love and money. Avoid making any serious relationship or financial decisions during this time. Dates: 19 Feb.

Void of Course Moon

The Moon takes two and a half days to cruise through each zodiac sign and during this time planetary aspects are formed. Culminating energies resonate through the Moon and the Earth, into our daily lives and activities, adding momentum to our personal energies. During a period with no planetary influences, the Moon’s course enters a void. Moments such as this require rest, self-preservation and self-care.

2020 Astrology - Joanna Grant

Void of Course Moon

Step into the void with gratitude for nothing other than the space to gather your dreams and visions around you like a cloak. Breathe and be still. Take time to turn inwards, to review, and to remember; listen to the guide within, and breathe again. There are no brave new beginnings here, no bold departures, no dramatic finales; it is not a time to push and strive. Yield to the moment; allow the breath of it to touch you in your unknown places, to ease your arms open for the release of that which needs to leave. Observe. Watch what happens when you put down the baton. Meditate. Listen to the quiet voice, the one that is often drowned in the daily grinding of wheels. Review. Fly up, birdlike, into the sky. Take the higher view. What is your perspective now?

The Moon Through the Signs.

Aries ♈︎ - I Am: The fire starter, the energy of spring, the bursting forth of life. Let me rush in, filled with excitement, childlike, exploring a brand new world, eager to conquer, brash and brave. I am the vanquishing soldier, God of War, cloaked in dreams of valorous deeds; but do not for a moment try to tame me, or hold me close, for I would die rather than be suffocated by a placid life.

Taurus ♉︎ - I Possess: The strength and fertility of the budding earth; I am the song of love, the sensuality of life itself. Taste me, touch me, take me, yield to me, and give yourself up to my creative and passionate desires. Through me experience the Goddess of love, the love of life, the love of the Earth, and all that clothes her.

Gemini ♊︎ - I Think: And my thoughts flit out into the air of the world like butterflies in summer. I gather and distribute, collect and share, I link and lace wherever I find, bringing ideas and thoughts together, that would not otherwise find each other. I am mischievous, psycho-pomp, walker between worlds, light and dark. My face is always smiling and I hide my darkness even from myself.

Cancer ♋︎ - I Feel: With every atom of my being, my tides turning with the vagaries of the moon. I nurture and care, my home is my castle, and I protect all that reside there with fierceness and devotion. I am mother, seductress, queen of the sea: from limpid calm to savage storm I can turn, in the break of a wave. Fear not under my command, I am the carer, the source divine.

Leo ♌︎ - I Will: Walk onto life’s stage with extravagance and playfulness, I will be the life and soul of the party! I am generous and giving, I am organised and loyal, I am a leader, I am the king of my domain. Feed me drama and excitement, wonder and glee, but also let us all be united in the desire for warmth, joy and laughter, for my heart is big enough to hold us all within its walls.

Virgo ♍︎ - I Analyse: I sort and sift, searching for meaning, pattern and purpose. I seek practical understanding, and am curious about how best to apply my skills. I am the smooth running of a well-oiled machine, the ordered perfection, the digested meal. My balance is finely tuned, sensitive to what does not belong. Listen to my body awareness, my earthy knowledge, my eternal search for harmony and health.

Libra ♎︎ - I Balance: I harmonise, I seek to reflect beauty and poise. I am the peerless perfection of structure and form; I am the peacemaker, the negotiator, the other side of every coin. In me, everything is weighed and adjusted. I bring justice to all things; I favour none, but speak only from the point of my truth. Seek not to beg favour, for I will always do what is right.

Scorpio ♏︎ - I Desire: to give myself up to the perfect storm of passion and power. I am the yearning hunger of lust, of possession, of revenge, of sorrow and of pain. I am the highest of heights, I am the lowest of lows, all tempests are mine to behold and command. Drink from the peak of my exquisite pain; know both heaven and hell in my arms.

Sagittarius ♐︎ - I Seek: to know all that I can, to experience distant places, in all realms. I am a traveller of far-off lands, which exist in earth, in fire, in air and in water. I learn, I gather, I expand my awareness; I delight in all new experiences. I constantly add to my store of knowledge and experience, bringing back tales of adventure and teaching.

Capricorn ♑︎ - I Achieve: all that I aspire to, slowly and with care and attention. I move cautiously, testing each step, making sure that my footing is secure. I am an upholder of tradition, stable and reliable. Change is not a joy for me, but I honour its necessity, and take my time. I appreciate the process and maturity of life, and I come to laugh at how small I am in the greater scheme.

Aquarius ♒︎ - I Know: more than I can explain, for I am in touch with the power of the collective human mind. All thoughts are mine and yet I own none of them. I am the power of the group, the heart of humanity, a child of the world. I speak for all peoples, I am beholden to no-one, I am a wanderer between Heaven and Earth.

Pisces ♓︎ - I Believe: in the power of the unseen. The waters of the womb are my source of inspiration, to surrender to a force that is greater than me, to return to the place where I came from. Through me, all seek to return to that point of bliss, that connection with the divine, that point of creation, that seed of perfect union.

Phases of the Moon

The silver thread of the waxing and waning moon guides us subtly through life’s tides. Attuning yourself with the moon’s phases, especially as they aspect your natal chart, can provide a living meditation, blessing your life with lunar harmony.

New Moon: I am the power of the bursting seed, dancing in the beckoning void, ripe with limitless potentials. A kaleidoscope of outcomes tempts you, but be still in the darkness of the Moon. Sense the power of her black womb, and wait. Trust that in the stillness, I, the right “seed”, will find you, a vision for your soul to nurture.

Crescent Moon: I push against your ingrained habits, your clinging to the past. Your fears do battle with me, for I am the promise of the new and they are the reassurance of the old. I threaten your stability and confront you with your fear of progress. Listen to your intuition; trust your desire to grow.

First Quarter Moon: My power is waxing; I fill you with your future vision. I lay foundations and clear away the structures of the past. I inspire you with potentials, my enthusiasm knows no boundaries. Dreams and visions carry you forwards into an expanding sense of possibilities.

Gibbous Moon: I have shown you my ecstatic fullness, and I must help you to shape your vision. In the growing light of my fullness, you reflect and clarify, become aware of both light and dark. Perfect your dreams, and understand all that is coming to be beneath my silver gaze.

Full Moon: In the glory of my fullness I speak to you, revealing my truth. There are no secrets here: all will be declared. Now it is time to turn away from that which is no longer fulfilling. I empower you to live your authentic self, to be unashamed of your fullness, to embrace your power, to proclaim your true self, without fear.

Disseminating Moon: As I diminish, I send my messengers out into the world, bearing the fruits of my experience. I help you to understand what has happened, how it can add value to your life and to the lives of others. Share my lessons, give my wisdom to others, become a teacher of all that you have learned. Sow seeds, harvested from our union, so that our story may bloom anew in another heart.

Last Quarter Moon: The darkness approaches, I portend the shock of the next phase. I challenge you to embody and LIVE all that you have learned, to re-orientate, to break away from your outworn patterns. As you cut a new path in the growing darkness, I ask you to trust, to accept the unknown with humour, to take the name of “pioneer”.

Balsamic Moon: With the last of my light, commit to your vision of the future. The past is shed, the future is foreshadowed. Now I am seer, I am oracle; release what is past, make room for the new. Give yourself up to this process of passing away and release yourself into the void.

2020 Retrograde Planets

Retrograde Mercury:

18th June – 12th July ~ I call you back that you may recognise the importance of nurturing what is of greatest value to you, to protect it, guard it and gird it against predators, so that it may grow in peace and love.
14th October – 3rd November ~ I call you back that you may recognise that a strong connection to your centre, your unwavering source, is the key to avoiding the slavery of momentary desires.

Retrograde Venus: 13th May – 25th June ~ I ask you to tread softly through the multitude of choices that are available to you, and to follow the quiet voice of your heart. Amid the jostle and confusion, follow the guidance of your soul, allow the persuasions and affairs of others to fall away, to leave what is important standing proud with welcoming arms.

Retrograde Mars: 9th September – 14th November ~ I present you with the challenge to live in the moment, to recognise that passion is a vehicle of creativity, rather than the destination itself. Within this experience I charge you to recognise the equal importance of the masculine & feminine forces within you, and to use them to create a world of your own choosing, a realm that reflects the truth of your heart.

The ‘Void of Course’ Moon - (V/C)

If you are interested in working with the Moon in your life and your projects, then knowing about these quiet times of lunar phase is essential. As the Moon travels to the end of a Zodiac sign, if she makes no significant relationship to another planet we regard her path, her ‘course’, as void for those hours – until she enters the field of the next Zodiac sign. For this period there will be little planetary energy pulsing through to Earth, little to bless new initiatives. However, this can also be used to your advantage! Slipping through the gaps we can avoid confrontation with something we consider too demanding or disadvantageous. Atunement to this period can be an interesting experience of space, which then enriches the rhythm and depth of our lives. For instance, like a pause, a side step in a dance, like the space between words in a poem, we take a breath.

Retrograde Planets

From our perspective on Earth it seems the planets sometimes stop and travel backwards in their wanderings. This sees them revisiting points in the Zodiac they had already passed. The lived experience of this indicates time for reflection on their particular influence and teachings.

Retrograde Mercury: On a practical level ensure your bicycles, computers, cars and phones are serviced in preparation for this time. Check your travel plans. On an interpersonal level be more patient and up for listening to others. We can meet mixed up transmissions with tolerance. Within your own self you will probably be called to be mindful of your own voice. It’s a perfect time to be open to stilling the mind, to reflect and receive a reorientation of thought. March 5th - 28th 2019, July 7th - August 2nd 2019, October 31st - November 19th 2019

Retrograde Jupiter: To be honest, this retrograde chunk in the middle of the year might be a good thing, as it will probably help steady the ideals and help anchor the meaning of the time. As it dovetails with a period of Mercury retrograde and they are both wisdom planets, it suggests a reflective energy in the summer. Excellent for academic and spiritual pursuits, though physical adventures may require more planning and preparation. April 10th 2019 – August 11th 2019

The Moon through the Signs

The Moon articulates the signs of the Zodiac differently from the Sun. Rather than a striving for the spiritual purpose of the sign, the Moon translates a more subjective experience of the energy to us earthly inhabitants.

♈︎ Moon in Aries: A time for contacting your individuality. Desire is inflamed! What are you prepared to fight for? This is the time to assert your self: to begin, to act and birth out into the world.

♉︎ Moon in Taurus: A time for getting in touch with your body and the Nature kingdom. Appreciate the material and sensual life and what you need in order to build your own security.

♊︎ Moon in Gemini: Time to communicate and learn. A time to mentally and socially embrace the intermingling of all forces and be alive to diversity. Time for the messenger and networking.

♋︎ Moon in Cancer: A good time for nourishment of the home, soul and senses. Very much linked with the past and family. Cooking, eating, caring, touching, intimacy, plants and the seashore. Feather your nest.

♌︎ Moon in Leo: Now is the time to shine! Play and creativity for its own sake. Power, drama, leadership, performance, playfulness, love and pleasure. Time for the Heart!

♍︎ Moon in Virgo: The radiance of Leo settles into the wisdom of the need to serve. These practical energies see the sacred nature of work. This is a good time to sift and sort, making improvements in life.

♎︎ Moon in Libra: A good time to enjoy art and culture. A time to communicate democratically. Libran energy teaches us that there is no ‘me’ without ‘you’. A harmonising and civilising force to work with. Do your books balance?

♏︎ Moon in Scorpio: The lunar energies are challenged and deepened here. A difficult expression but potent. A good time to face shared difficulties, move beyond power-plays and let go. A good time to check on shared finances and resources.

♐︎ Moon in Sagittarius: Energy is much freer now. The invitation is to expand, to seek for truth of the spirit, to discover cosmic laws in our life. A good time for special journeys and a pursuit of special knowledge.

♑︎ Moon in Capricorn: A time for tough love and facing practicalities, obligations and duties. This is a good time for economising and managing resources with your greater goals in mind. Good for business and family.

♒︎ Moon in Aquarius: The strength of this time comes through friendship and group pursuits. Light and impersonal, the Moon works best here with ideals, social connection and group creativity with a shared goal in mind.

♓︎ Moon in Pisces: A return to dreaming, the Moon in Pisces feels all. This time suits the imagination, compassion and spirituality. We may turn from the world and its suffering or open our Hearts to healing.

Phases of the Moon

The Moon is our supreme translator of the Light of creation. Rather than being subsidiary to the glorious Sun, her role is actually to bring forth creation on Earth like the Mother she is, for she is the necessary intermediary between the Sun, stars and the developing Earth consciousness. The lunar energy both brings form into the world and oversees its demise. She works with the etheric level of life. She works with Form and Time and so she shapes the patterning of the world around us. We can mark the lunar power through the phases of the Moon:

The New Moon: The beginning of a new cycle attuned to the energies of the sign the Sun and Moon are in. A seed time, a dream time, a good time to set intentions quietly in your inner space.

The Crescent Moon: We begin to see the thin sharp sickle of moonlight. Energy begins to gather. Subtle signs of growth and form appear.

The Waxing Quarter Moon: The upward surge of energy meets with resistance. A time when we can encounter conflicts and blocks that shape the growth of our intention. Be prepared to make concessions and compromise, for that is what will take you forward.

The Gibbous Moon: Now the challenges are overcome and there is nothing to impede the inevitable growth. This is a harmonious time, where we attract allies and create together.

The Full Moon: The power of the initial intention and inspiration are gloriously blossoming in our lives. The seed, the dream, is manifested and blessed. There is a magic and a madness to the bright energy.

The Disseminating Moon: Now, what was grown can be shared. What has ripened can be eaten and enjoyed. A teaching Moon.

The Waning Quarter Moon: The energy must break down, the project must change. Here we have the challenge of admitting the necessity of change, the challenge of admitting imperfection. An excellent time for serious review as we face having to let go.

The Balsamic Moon: This time calls us to surrender all that was dreamt, all that was made real. The greater mysteries of creation see the destruction of what was manifest in order to re-enter the cycle of creation anew. This perfects the intention and holds the dream of our rebirth as co-creators in life.

Dancing with the Moon

If you are interested in furthering your effectiveness in working with Lunar lore then I suggest two clear paths you could try. During the day the Earth’s ionosphere forms an extra shield around her as protection from the harshness of the Sun’s rays. At night frequency changes and so the ionosphere is softened. The rays of the Moon and stars can now permeate Earth, carry out their transmissions and be absorbed by Nature. So, spending time outside at night is a great way to open to the Moon and more fully send her your love and receive her gifts. This way is more embodied and suits the growth of an intuitive and inspirational path. A more intellectual and strategic way to work with lunar energies is to synthesise the phase of the Moon with the sign it’s in. This way we can make more informed choices in our lives. We can also hone our observation of the lunar effect on life around us.

Void of Course Moon

The Moon ceases making aspects to the planets as it approaches the end of each zodiac sign, a period of hours shown in the diary pages as V/C every two or three days. As the Moon aspects a planet it is said to precipitate events, triggering energy for action and projects. So a Void of Course Moon is no longer triggering planetary energy until it moves into the next sign. This fallow time is perfect for doing the things you’ve been putting off, because nothing else is pushing to be started. So, finish things that you may have begun and not yet had the time to complete; chill with friends, or perhaps just give yourself rest if you need it; read a book, meditate quietly, or ponder inwardly. Tune in to the quality of that Moon sign in your life, so you are better prepared for immersion in the next Moon sign - see the list of Moon through the Zodiac Signs.

The Moon through the Zodiac Signs

As the Moon circles the Earth, she channels to us the qualities of the starry constellations, the Sidereal Zodiac. Biodynamic gardeners follow that sequence of qualities, although the influence on the land of the Phases of the Moon is more pronounced in effect. Western astrologers use the Tropical Zodiac, which follows the same sequence but depends only on the Sun’s relationship with the Earth. (The dance between these two Zodiacs creates the great astrological Ages - we are shifting from the Pisces Age to the Age of Aquarius). The Moon shines into our emotional life from each sign for only two days, so our mood quickly changes from one sign’s quality to the next:

♈︎ Moon in Aries: a drive to action; speed; impatience. Others are equally keen to get to their destination, so take care as you travel about. Perfect for waking up to your surroundings, ready for the move into...

♉︎ Moon in Taurus: slowing down; rooting; getting grounded - back to square one. Take time, don’t push yourself. Steady progress is assured. Great for gardening and being with nature. Exercise and rest prepare you for...

♊︎ Moon in Gemini: connecting; making phone calls; talking/listening with friends, clients and colleagues. Getting out and about while the energy moves us all, you will feel deserving of...

♋︎ Moon in Cancer: coming home; cooking; taking care of yourself - and another. Emotions are flowing, so give them space. Knowing how you really feel, you will be more ready for...

♌︎ Moon in Leo: being yourself; showing up; sincerely praising others. Good for enjoyable gatherings, and expressing positive opinions. Connecting with the world from an open heart, you discover who you are, and then you will be ready for...

♍︎ Moon in Virgo: the everyday work; clearing spaces; sorting things out. Focus on the tasks that will improve your life, or the lives of others. Take time, and organise yourself for good health and well-being. When you are sorted, you will be ready for...

♎︎ Moon in Libra: relating to another; finding out how life is for someone else; rebuilding friendship bridges. A good time to say what 6 needs to be said kindly, to prepare a space of harmony for...

♏︎ Moon in Scorpio: going deeper; recognising your real motivations; dealing with finance and family. Emotions will be rising from old beliefs and hurts, so tread carefully when anyone is upset (including yourself). Own up, transform your attitude, and then go for...

♐︎ Moon in Sagittarius: finding out the truth; trying another way; laughing kindly at yourself and the world. Explore new ideas, discuss problems positively, and have fun! Only after that will you want to be ready for...

♑︎ Moon in Capricorn: putting ideas into practice to achieve your planned results. Take responsibility for your life being what it is, and set about doing what is necessary. Having fulfilled your commitments, it’s time for...

♒︎ Moon in Aquarius: standing back; making time and space for yourself, and for others. Breathe and take stock; with a detached view, consider the part you play in your community. Having savoured your freedom, you will be ready for...

♓︎ Moon in Pisces: meditating; sensing the ebb and flow of all life; feeling spirit as part of every moment. World events trigger everyone’s emotions - so be kind and respectful to all in the truth of oneness; and you will eventually experience a need for... Moon in Aries!

Phases of the Moon

We have the opportunity to begin a new emotional cycle at each New Moon. The Sun sign, as the Moon reaches it, bathes us all in that quality for the following month. We experience the waxing and waning of the Moon through our emotional responses to each unfolding situation.

New Moon: A seed of light from one of the Zodiac signs is planted, and that quality will colour our emotional involvement in whatever begins now. But as the seed is deep within the ground of our being, we may not yet know what will grow.

Crescent Moon: We see the first shoots of the new seed of light, and feel the stirrings of growth within. Something in daily life may have started to develop, and we need to allow the natural timing of its growth without interfering too much.

First Quarter: Problems of expansion may arise, where our established habits and attitudes may want to block the new plant’s growth. We need to clear space amongst our assumptions of what we need, which may entail uncomfortable introspection.

Gibbous Moon: Having passed the blocking inertia of past expectations, growth is rapid and strong. We have a good idea now of what the New Moon seed was about, and life makes way for its flowering. This is the optimum time for seed germination.

Full Moon: The fullest growth for this cycle is now on show. The light of purpose it brings touches our soul and shines in our face, and we respond emotionally, rising to the task.

Disseminating Moon: The fruit of the New Moon seed is ready to share, the light to be radiated into the shadowy areas of our lives. With the giving comes new understanding, the pressure fades, and the work gets done..

Last Quarter: It is now time to gently withdraw from identifying with what has been achieved. This is a time of letting go.

Balsamic Moon: The cycle is almost complete. We need to accept the lessening in motivation and relax, rather than trying to create a ‘new’ burst of enthusiasm. This is our opportunity to open inside with gratitude for what has been, becoming ready to receive the next Zodiac impulse.

Retrograde Planets

Planets appear to travel backwards through the Zodiac when we are overtaking them. A planet’s retrograde movement suggests a reluctance to express its energy outwardly. So we use the energy inwardly, and consequently experience hold-ups in the flow.

Mercury - Being about movement, be prepared for hold-ups in local travelling and misunderstandings in communication. Develop your self-awareness, meditate, and get your correspondence up to date. Focus deliberately on what is going on around you, responding to situations as though other people are asleep! Say clearly what you mean, and listen carefully for what others mean. And don’t take the glitches personally! Three times during 2018: 23rd March - 15th April; 26th July - 19th August; 17th November - 6th December.

Jupiter - For four months every year, Jupiter’s growthful influence fades. Projects that were developing nicely seem to slow down, or even stop. Leave them fallow, or gently review them, making adjustments and checking the grounding is good, to go forward successfully when the energy picks up. This year Jupiter is in Scorpio, so deep emotional issues may be re-worked, or any business or financial plans. 9th March - 10th July 2018.

Mars - The motivating energy of Mars, felt inwardly at the solar plexus, will likely have us making a stand in Aquarius and Capricorn, polarising on the spectrum of freedom: focussed on either personal independence, or humanitarian issues. Check and take care of all electrical systems, including your nervous system. And don’t push for results! 26th June - 27th August 2018

Venus - Venus, transiting through Scorpio, will be looking at your deepest emotional concerns in relationships. So this is an opportunity to enquire into what you really feel, recognising that what you want, you need to provide for yourself before you attract it from another. People’s behaviour has deep roots, so be kind, and respectful of vulnerabilities. 6th October - 16th November 2018

The Phases of the Moon

The Moon, the Queen of the Night, the celestial embodiment of the Divine Feminine, is both ever-changing and eternal. As she moves through her phases in the monthly drama enacted across the night sky, she shows us the mystery of life, the perennial cycle of birth and death, and the promise of rebirth. We recognise that life on earth reflects these patterns of the heavens, as we discover that all aspects of life are cyclical. From the fruitfulness of the earth and women’s fertility cycles to our creativity, relationships and work, all life ebbs and flows. Life and time are cyclical and reflect the lunar cycle of birth, culmination, death and rebirth. As we connect to the cycles of nature and the heavens, we can recognise our own inner and outer cycles and seek to align our activities with the larger cyclical patterns of life.

New Moon is the seed moment of the cycle and the time of the dark moon when the moon conjuncts the sun. This is the period of introspection and contemplation when we can pay attention to what is beneath the surface and seed intentions into the fertile soil of the inner world to awake with the increase of light. A time for contemplation and introspection.

Crescent Moon is the time of the visible new moon when the young crescent moon sets just after sunset. This is the time of new beginnings and a time to initiate new plans as this fresh growing moon brings the ideas and experiences seeded in the dark to life. A time for new beginnings.

First Quarter is a time of adjustment or challenge when the moon stands square to the sun and we can test our resolve or steady ourselves to overcome obstacles. A time of action, expression and organisation.

Gibbous Moon is a time of increasing light when the moon waxes bright and growth flourishes as this swelling tide brings greater consciousness and awareness. A time for growth and development.

Full Moon at the full moon we reach a peak of expansion. This is the time of maximum illumination when our capacity for reflection and our sensitivity is at its height and events and experiences come to culmination. A time for realisation and fulfilment.

Disseminating Moon is the beginning of the waning phase as the light begins to diminish and we move to a period of sharing and sending out the fruits of our plans and experiences which were realised at the full moon. A time for sharing and distributing.

Last Quarter is a further testing time when the waning square brings reorientation and evaluation. This is a period when we can reorganise and clear out what is no longer useful. A time for realignment and revision.

Balsamic Moon This time calls us to surrender all that was dreamt, all that was made real. The greater mysteries of creation see the destruction of what was manifest in order to re-enter the cycle of creation anew. This perfects the intention and holds the dream of our rebirth as co-creators in life.

Retrograde Planets

From our earth-centred perspective anchored in the land, at times the planets appear to move backwards against the stars. These periods offer us the opportunity for introspection, reflection, revisiting and reworking.

Mercury Retrograde may evoke some confusion or misunderstanding in our communications and plans such that we might want to double check our diaries or our travel arrangements, yet at these times he can offer us the opportunity to revisit conversations or ideas, or support periods of meditation or reflection on our projects and plans.

Mercury’s retrograde periods in 2017 are as follows: beginning of the year to 8th Jan; 10th April to 3rd May; 13th August to 5th September; 3rd December to 23rd December.

Venus Retrograde may engender some turbulence in our relationships or creative work, yet at these times she can offer us the opportunity to rework aspects of our relationships and can support new creative currents to emerge. Venus’ retrograde period in 2017 is 4th March to 15th April.

Void of Course Moon

The Moon, travelling on her monthly path through the heavens, makes connections to the other planets by aspect as she journeys around the whole zodiac in this time. The void of course period (v/c) is a time when she makes no further traditional aspects to the planets before changing sign. This can be a fallow time when new actions or plans may fail to initiate or events pause. At times this is welcome, when resting, doing nothing or when no further action can be the best option or outcome!

Phases of the Moon

Moon phase rhyme:
Horns in the East and we’re in for a feast.
Horns in the West and we shall have a rest!

A Moon cycle, as it circles through all twelve signs of the zodiac, begins at the New Moon – when Luna conjuncts the Sun. This cycle of the ‘Lights’, or ‘Luminaries’, is called ‘a lunation’; each lunation is approximately 29 days, depending upon the speed of the Moon’s motion, which can vary throughout the seasons. Every Moon cycle presents eight very definite windows of opportunity to regularly open every month; the lunar portals act as markers for significant passages in our lives. It is with the Moon that we note times to sow the seeds of intention, to grow, cut back, and celebrate a harvest. Each lunation is also divided into two: from New to Full Moon, the Moon is waxing, dynamic and yang in energy, culminating as compassion in action, and seen rising in the right hand side of the sky; from Full to Dark Moon it is waning, receptive and yin, replete with wisdom and awareness, rising in the left-hand side of the sky.

The New Moon, when Sun conjuncts Luna we cannot see the Moon; it is a powerful time of hidden potency and below-the-surface germination. Setting an intention and starting projects infuses determination to innovate and develop, culminate and give good yield.

The Crescent Moon reflects Sun’s light pointing horns into the East. Seeds planted at the Dark/New Moon begin to reveal tender tips. During this moon phase it is essential to assess the environment, to establish strength and stability and regular access to one’s needs.

The First Quarter Moon is a time to quickly make any adjustments required to maintain a sense of accomplishment. This is a critical phase. Applying remedies and overcoming obstacles are best done by remaining on centre, i.e. eat well, sleep well, and be well.

The Gibbous Moon provides clarity and direction for the heart-mind to remain on course, playfully, lightly, and in good humour, radiating strength towards raising the good and positive: a most auspicious Moon phase for helpful action and rational logic.

The Full Moon heightens the senses, exciting emotion. At Full Moon the cyclic dance between the Luminaries peaks, reflecting Sol’s rays; moon shines the brightest, creativity culminates and plants bloom. (Check this year’s Summer Solstice Full Moon, for instance!)

The Disseminating Moon sees the light in the night sky begin to wane. A time of reflection beckons. This is the last chance to actively harvest the rest of that which culminated at the Full Moon, before settling into the darker, more contemplative, feminine half of the lunation.

The Last Quarter Moon is a time of clearing space, and tidying away that which is no longer necessary. Under waning moonlight, changes can also be physical: disease symptoms and pain can disappear – a reminder that suffering can be released back into the void from whence it came.

The Dark Balsamic Moon emits the most powerful feminine yin; resting, reflecting and extracting the essence of the lunation’s feelings, events and situations, digesting where we have come from, all the while gently preparing for and/or planting the seed for the next New Moon.

Retrograde planets 2016

Retrograde planets are not really planets going backwards in the solar system, but because of Earth’s faster speed it looks as though they are - like when you’re overtaking a car and its wheels seem to be going in reverse. As such, these are times in which the energies of the retrograde come into a sharper focus. We may be moving too fast and need to revise, retreat or resolve. During an apparent retrograde motion any word with a ‘re’ at the beginning can be called for, such as reappraise, re-wire, redo, reapply, re-join, rework, review, repair.

Mercury Retrograde happens three times a year and is the most infamous and tricky. In 2016 these retrogrades take place in Earth Signs. Mercury rules the mind, our intelligence and communication. During Mercury retrograde all kinds of information, data and facts needs to be re-checked and often re-worked, and triple-checked when signing documents. In Earth signs, Mercury accents information about the environment, financial conditions, and occupation.

Void Of Course Moon

The ‘Void Of Course’ Moon (vc) is a term used to describe a phase between the Moon changing signs, as it moves from one sign to the next. The vc marks the end of traditional aspects the Moon makes to another planet, before making another aspect from its new sign. This means every couple of days there is a period when the Moon makes no major connections to other planets. This ‘time-out’ varies, sometimes lasting for hours or even days; though vc’s influence varies, starting projects with the Void-of-Course Moon can mean intentions are thwarted, or even that problems momentarily disappear!

Moon Through The Signs

Grandmother Moon circles Mother Earth every 29 days taking 2 and a half days to move through each sign. Observing the qualities of each sign can guide us in our daily lives.

Moon in Aries - governs the head. A yang Fire sign that brings inspiration, desire and the energy to get things done. Ruled by Mars - can be impulsive and impatient but encourages us to take risks and be pioneering.

Moon in Taurus – governs throat and neck. A yin Earth sign ruled by Venus, it encourages us to ground and take time to cultivate our gardens, relationships, home, plants and body and kindles maternal instincts.

Moon in Gemini – governs lungs and chest. A yang Air sign ruled by Mercury, lightening the mood, reminding us of the sacredness of communication and community. We may feel restless and scattered at this time. Important to breathe and focus.

Moon in Cancer – governs stomach and breasts. A yin Water sign, ruled by Grandmother Moon, emotional and oceanic. Nurture yourself and family and make your home sacred. If you feel overwhelmed become objective, look at the bigger picture.

Moon in Leo – governs the heart. A yang Fire sign ruled by the Sun, abundant and playful calling on us to express ourselves. A good time to celebrate with the Pride, be aware of melodrama and stay in Truth.

Moon in Virgo – governs the abdomen and intestines. A yin Earth sign ruled by Mercury helping us digest new information and experiences. Also helps with discriminating between what is and isn’t working in our lives and lets us weed out with compassion and forgiveness.

Moon in Libra – governs the kidneys and lumbar region. A yang Air sign ruled by Venus, when we seek harmony, light encounters and keeping everybody happy. A peaceful time, good for weighing things up but not necessarily for making decisions.

Moon in Scorpio – governs the sex organs. A yin Water sign ruled by Pluto, intense and powerful, encouraging us to dive deeper into our own psyches and take a look at our shadow self with more willingness to look at our fears and what lies behind them. Sexual desire may be stronger than usual.

Moon in Sagittarius – governs the hips and thighs. A yang Fire sign ruled by Jupiter that brings us out of the depths and encourages us to strive for more, to shoot our arrows high, to seek justice. Full of optimism and potential we plan anew. Only take on what you can handle once the expansive Jupiter energy moves on.

Moon in Capricorn – governs the knees and bones. A yin Earth sign ruled by Saturn that encourages us to seek order, strength and wisdom. The architect of the Zodiac helping us to build strong foundations and sow seeds for the future. Good for group work. Practise self-acceptance and flexibility.

Moon in Aquarius – governs the ankles. A masculine Air sign, ruled by Uranus and Saturn. Let your uniqueness and individuality encourage you to think outside the box but also see that in the bigger picture there are no boxes. Helps us see where we fit into the community and what we can do for the greater whole.

Moon in Pisces – governs the feet. A yin Water sign, ruled by Neptune. A nebulous longing to merge with the void, the cosmic womb and go home. Be aware of escapist desires and find a positive outlet such as meditating, visioning, spiritual work and being creative.

Phases of the Moon

There are eight moon phases during the 29.5 day lunar cycle and each phase lasts approximately 3-4 days.

The New Moon Phase (0-45 degrees ahead of the Sun). Moon rises at dawn and sets at sunset. The Dance begins with the Sun and Moon in conjunction, both in the same astrological sign. The waxing Moon is not yet visible but seeds are in place and the vision is felt but not yet seen. A good time to begin a new project.

The Crescent Moon (45-90 degrees ahead of the Sun). Moon rises mid-morning and sets after sunset. The first visible sliver of Moon is seen, first glimpses of the vision also, as the seed tentatively pushes its first shoots above ground.

The First Quarter (90-135 degrees ahead of the Sun) is the Waxing Half Moon. Moon rises at noon and sets at midnight. Light and Dark are in balance and Light is ascending. The outline of what is to be comes into form as projects and ideas gain ground.

The Gibbous Moon (135-180 degrees ahead of the Sun). Moon rises mid afternoon and sets around 3am. Now it’s time to perfect what can be seen more clearly as the Light becomes more powerful.

The Full Moon (180-135 degrees behind the Sun). Moon rises at sunset and sets at dawn. At the moment of the Full Moon the Sun and Moon are in opposition, in opposing astrological signs. This is the flowering of the cycle, the gifts of whichever signs the two luminaries are in. Be open to receive them and also aware of high emotion that can accompany this phase.

Disseminating Moon (135-90 degrees behind the Sun). Moon rises mid evening and sets at mid morning. The first stirring of the Dark. The seeds planted at the New Moon have flowered and fulfilled their destiny. Now with the first stirring of the dark these gifts need disseminating and sharing.

Last Quarter (90-45 degrees behind the Sun). Moon rises at midnight and sets at midday. The Light and Dark are once again in balance but the Dark is gaining and the energy is drawing back inward. We begin to slow down and begin the process of shedding what has served its purpose and is no longer needed.

Balsamic Moon or Dark Moon (45- 0 degrees behind the Sun). Moon rises at 3 am and sets mid afternoon. Time to retreat, withdraw, meditate and reflect on what has been accomplished and what no longer bears fruit in our lives. A time to recharge on the inner planes.

Retrograde Planets 2015

Retrograde is when a planet, as seen from the Earth, appears to be moving backward from its normal direct motion. This is due to the angle of the Earth and the planets in their orbits. When a planet is in direct motion, planetary energies are more straightforward and when retrograde they become more unpredictable and convoluted. We do not operate in the same energy field when a planet is retrograde as when it is direct. It is a tine to reassess and re-evaluate how we interact with our world at large.

Mercury Retrograde:- Planet of mind and communication. Back up your computer, be prepared for communication breakdowns, telephone glitches, internet connection issues and travel delays! Repair, review, research, rehearse but most of all be here now, present and aware of what’s happening and how to deal with it. Panic is not the solution; acceptance helps; be clear in communicating to prevent misunderstandings.

Venus Retrograde:- Planet of Love, relationships, possessions, pleasure and nurturing. Relationship issues may need addressing and old relationships may need revisiting for closure. Be patient, gentle and kind. Be careful what you buy as you may regret it later! Our values and material values are being reviewed, challenged and changed. This will be revealed in the areas of finance, relationships and your concept of all things beautiful.

Void Of Course Moon

Grandmother Moon is said to be Void of Course from the last significant lunar aspect in each sign until the Moon enters a new sign, every two and a half days, and is once again aspected by another Planet. This can last for a few minutes or up to hours.

It’s a good time to go with the flow as much as you can and not push the river. Take time to ground and centre yourself; it’s not a good time to begin any new ventures. Like the Dark Moon it’s good for meditating, journeying and visioning.
